Review: Annabelle's Look! Nougat Bar

Tonight I will be reviewing the Annabelle's Look! candy bar. 

Look! Chewy Good!

I purchased this bar at Sugar Heaven in Massachusetts. The bar sold for $1.89. The bar is described as "Rich Chocolate Covered Nougat with Peanuts".


How does it look?

I'm unsure as to whether the leakage of nougat is my fault or the manufacturers. I'm going to go ahead and say it was my fault, considering this was left in a hot car but a few hours while I shopped around Boston. The actual bar is covered in a glossy chocolate. The nougat that has leaked out is flesh-toned. The bar is about 6 inches in length, but only about 1/4 of an inch thick. I've included a quarter in the picture for comparison. 

The cross section reveals the thin layer of chocolate surrounding the flesh colored nougat. I don't see any actual pieces of peanut just yet. 


How does it taste?


The first bite surprised me. I was expecting to bite through a sweet chocolate layer, but the chocolate was certainly not the sweet milk chocolate I am used to. It had a dark note to it. I read the description but it only says "rich chocolate" and does not specify milk or dark. I checked the ingredients list, but all that is listed is "chocolate". Sure enough, after a google search, I discovered the bar does is in fact use dark chocolate. I prefer milk chocolate on it's own, but the dark chocolate does a nice job of complimenting the nutty interior. The candy is described as "nougat WITH peanuts" but what I tasted on my first bite was a peanut flavored nougat. It is very peanutty indeed, and I like it. However, on my second bite, I sucked on the nougat for a little bit, and sure enough after I had melted down the nougat a little more, there was a little piece of peanut or two left over. My third bite I also came across more pieces of mini peanuts. The thin chocolate layer is easily masked by the peanut nougat after a few chews, but frankly, I don't have a problem with that. The nougat has a very good nutty flavor, but if you suck on it for a little while the taste gets a little weird. The best way I can think of describing it would be that it has a taste EXTREMELY similar to candy corn. Also not a bad thing in my book, just different. This bar is incredibly chewy, so I do not recommend it to those with braces or those who.... don't like to chew. But overall I really enjoyed this bar, and would definitely purchase it again if I came across it.
